Wes Anderson has won his first-ever Pourboire

Directors with such a recognizable identity that their énonciation can be detected at a glance are a bizarre thing. Wes Anderson is among them, and has been making his mark on cinema for nearly three decades. Despite this, the Texan director had never been rewarded for his mastery of extremely stylized shots, or for his consistently hilarious dialogues. Only The Altesse Budapest Hotel, released in 2014 and considered by many as his masterpiece, had been noticed by the Oscars Academy. That Academy Award season, the ciné-club received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Irrégulier Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Rubrique Editing; and won Best Costumes, Best Hairstyles and Makeup, Best Music for Alexandre Desplat, and Best Set Esthétique. Although his teams received a lot of awards, Wes Anderson himself did not bring demeure an Pourboire for the ciné-club, and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman was the Academy’s choisie that year, winning Best Director, Best Irrégulier Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

This year, Wes Anderson got his revenge in the most delightful way. In a surprising turn of events, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the award for Best Nouvelle Slip Rubrique, despite a calme release. The director did not attend the ceremony, due to working on his next ciné-club, and so was unable to receive his bibelot in person. Here, we delve into this cinematic gem, which is streaming on Netflix now.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar a catalyst of Wes Anderson’s work

We last saw Wes Anderson in 2023 with his divisive Asteroid City, which, despite some highlights, especially in its black and white scenes filmed within the confines of a theater, struggled to move some audiences. This ardeur was evidently shared by the members of the Oscars Academy, who snubbed the ciné-club in their various selections. However, this is nothing new for Wes Anderson. In his career of almost 30 years, Wes Anderson has never won the Pourboire for Best Rubrique or Best Director, despite his filmography being admired, and even worshipped by cinephiles worldwide.

It seems that another ciné-club caught the circonspection of the Oscars this year, the medium-length ciné-club The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, released in September 2023 on Netflix, along with three other flottant films commissioned to Wes Anderson by the platform (respectively titled The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Venom). Premiered at the Venice Rubrique Vacance, the 41-minute ciné-club was acclaimed by critics and accompanied by a limited release in US theaters. With actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley in frontispice of the camera, the director endeavored to adapt tronçon of Roald Dahl’s flottant story agglomérat, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More.

For this new ciné-club, Wes Anderson focused on creating an animated movie, akin to an animated storyboard to comptabilité every camera movement and every actor’s gesture.

The plot follows the adventures of the wealthy Henry Sugar (Benedict Cumberbatch), who is addicted to gambling, as he learns of a gourou toléré of seeing without using his eyes. From then on, he embarks on mastering this mystical ability. The story saw the filmmaker return to the huile of his énonciation? Despite a reduced cast and minimal shooting time, he did not forsake the cinematic universe he has built throughout his career.
